Crossword Genius

Generous Dominican hardly to be found in prison (7)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

freedom

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'found in prison' is the definition.
The definition and answer can be both states of affairs as well as being singular nouns.
Maybe they are linked in a way I don't understand?

'generous dominican hardly' is the wordplay.
'generous' becomes 'free' (I've seen this before).
'dominican hardly' becomes 'dom' (I can't explain this - if you can you should give a lot more credence to this answer).
'free'+'dom'='FREEDOM'

'to be' acts as a link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for freedom that I've seen before include "outspokenness" , "Autonomy" , "Liberty, civil liberty" , "Release" , "Political militant" .)

I've seen this clue in the Evening Standard.
