Crossword Genius

Gift from relative -- it's unwrapped (5)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

grant

'gift' is the definition.
(I know that grant is a type of aid)

'relative it's unwrapped' is the wordplay.
'relative' becomes 'gran' (short for grandmother).
'unwrapped' indicates the central letters (the letters which wrap the word are removed).
The central letter of 'its' is 't'.
'gran'+'t'='GRANT'

'from' is the link.

(Other definitions for grant that I've seen before include "Greek, a soldier" , "Monetary aid" , "Permit" , "... Cambridgeshire village" , "Give or allow as a privilege" .)

I've seen this clue in The Telegraph.
