Crossword Genius

Midnight; hobbles back to take a quick look (7)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

glimpse

'a quick look' is the definition.
(I've seen this in another clue)

'midnight hobbles back to take' is the wordplay.
'midnight' becomes 'g' (the middle letter in 'night').
'hobbles' becomes 'limps' ('limp' can be a synonym of 'hobble').
'back to' says to take the final letters.
The final letter of 'take' is 'e'.
'g'+'limps'+'e'='GLIMPSE'

(Other definitions for glimpse that I've seen before include "A quick look" , "Gander" , "Notice" , "vague idea" , "Peek" .)

I've seen this clue in the Sydney Morning Herald.
