Put good slant on short car trip (4)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

spin

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'short car trip' is the definition.
(as in taking a car for a spin)

'put good slant' is the wordplay.
'put' is an insertion indicator.
'good' becomes 'pi' (old-fashioned term for pious).
'slant' becomes 'sn' (I can't justify this - if you can you should believe this answer much more).
'pi' placed inside 'sn' is 'SPIN'.

'on' is the link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for spin that I've seen before include "Doctoring of news etc" , "Mendacious PR; type of bowling" , "some doctors deal with" , "Make up a story" , "what some bowlers hope for" .)

I've seen this clue in The Telegraph.
