Crossword Genius

Put the wrong cards on the table, perhaps (7)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

misdeal

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'put' is the definition.
The answer and definition can be both acts as well as being singular nouns.
Maybe there's an association between them I don't understand?

'wrong cards on the table perhaps' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite see how this works, but
'wrong' could be 'mis' (similar in meaning) and 'mis' is present in the answer.
The remaining letters 'deal' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't see.
This explanation may well be incorrect...

'the' is the link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for misdeal that I've seen before include "Faulty distribution" , "Give out the cards wrongly" , "Faulty issue of cards" , "Give out cards incorrectly" , "Right hand that isn't" .)

I've seen this clue in The Irish News.
