Crossword Genius

Receive your deserts, we hear, and get the bird... (4)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

erne

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'bird' is the definition.
(erne is a kind of bird)

'receive your deserts we hear and get' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite see how this works, but
'and' could be 'n' (common abbreviation for 'and') and 'n' is present in the answer.
The remaining letters 'ere' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't understand.
This explanation may well be incorrect...

'the' acts as a link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for erne that I've seen before include "White-tailed eagle" , "'Sea-eagle, river and lough (4)'" , "Large bird" , "Eagle, river and lough" , "Fish-eating sea eagle" .)

I've seen this clue in The Irish News.
