Regularly poaches many wildcats (7)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

ocelots

'wildcats' is the definition.
(I know this)

'regularly poaches many' is the wordplay.
'regularly' means one should take alternating letters (regularly take one letter, leave next etc.).
'many' becomes 'lots' (lots of something).
The alternate letters of 'poaches' are 'oce'.
'oce'+'lots'='OCELOTS'

(Other definitions for ocelots that I've seen before include "animals in the wild" , "Close to, oddly, the wildcats" , "Cats - cool set (anag)" , "Small leopards found in sole cot" .)

I've seen this clue in The Everyman puzzle in The Observer.
