Crossword Genius

Ring five times for a symbol (7)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

olympic

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'ring five' is the definition.
Although both the answer and definition are adjectives, I don't understand how one could define the other.

'times for a symbol' is the wordplay.
I cannot really understand how this works, but
'symbol' could be 'pi' (pi is a kind of symbol) and 'pi' is located in the answer.
This explanation may well be incorrect...

(Other definitions for olympic that I've seen before include "International athletic event" , "Of ancient Greek site (of original games)" , "Games, quadrennial in occurrence" , "Of four-year games" , "of certain events" .)

I've seen this clue in The Irish Independent.
