Crossword Genius

Rogue, for example, returning sponge (5)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

cadge

'sponge' is the definition.
(I know that sponge can be written as cadge)

'rogue for example returning' is the wordplay.
'rogue' becomes 'cad' (I've seen this in another clue).
'for example' becomes 'e.g.' (short for 'exempli gratia', 'for example' in Latin).
'returning' says the letters should be written backwards.
'eg' backwards is 'ge'.
'cad'+'ge'='CADGE'

(Other definitions for cadge that I've seen before include "Scrouge, ask for" , "get free" , "Get money by sponging" , "freeload" , "Sponge (eg money)" .)

I've seen this clue in The Daily Express.
