Crossword Genius

Runs away to the west, with money secured (8)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

strapped

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'secured' is the definition.
(strapping is a kind of securing)

'runs away to the west with money' is the wordplay.
'runs away' becomes 'departs' (I can't explain this - if you can you should believe this answer much more).
'to the west' says the letters should be written in reverse (letters written right to left or \'east to west\').
'with' is an insertion indicator.
'money' becomes 'p'.
'departs' back-to-front is 'straped'.
'straped' going around 'p' is 'STRAPPED'.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for strapped that I've seen before include "broke" , "not generating enough cash?" , "Needy - secured" , "affected by shortage" , "Bound" .)

I've seen this clue in The Hindu.
