Crossword Genius

Showy learner enlisted offhandedly (9)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

tinselled

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'showy' is the definition.
The answer and definition are not the same part of speech. However, adjectives and past participle verbs occasionally mean the same thing.

'learner enlisted offhandedly' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite see how this works, but
'learner' could be 'l' (as in a learner driver with L-plates on their car) and 'l' is present in the answer.
an anagram of 'enlisted' is 'tinseled' which is present in the remaining letters.
No letters remain.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

Can you help me to learn more?

(Another definition for tinselled that I've seen is " just like the 32 [TREE] this time of year!".)

I've seen this clue in the Sydney Morning Herald.
