Crossword Genius

Straighten out to take left? The reverse actually (3,5)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

put right

'straighten out' is the definition.
(synonyms)

'left? the reverse actually' is the wordplay.
I cannot really understand how this works, but
'the' could be 't' (the is pronounced as a 't' sound in some dialects) and 't' is found in the answer.
'reverse' could be 'right' (righting is a kind of reversing) and 'right' is present in the answer.
This explanation may well be incorrect...

'to take' is the link.

(Other definitions for put right that I've seen before include "Correct" , "Make good" , "Repair" .)

I've seen this clue in The Guardian.
