Crossword Genius

Tightly connected kin and closet rebels (5-4)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

close-knit

'tightly connected' is the definition.
(I've seen this in another clue)

'kin and closet rebels' is the wordplay.
'and' says to put letters next to each other.
'rebels' is an anagram indicator.
'kin' after 'closet' is 'closetkin'.
'closetkin' anagrammed gives 'CLOSE-KNIT'.

(Other definitions for close-knit that I've seen before include "No tickles, being woven tightly" , "Intimate as a group" , "United or joined together - with wool?" , "Bound together by strong relationships" , "Bound together as by family ties" .)

I've seen this clue in the Sydney Morning Herald.
