Trick of the French to forego training (4)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

dupe

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'trick' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)

'of the french to forego training' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite see how this works, but
'training' could be 'pe' (Physical Education) and 'pe' is located in the answer.
'of the french' could be 'du' ('of the' in French) and 'du' is found in the answer.
This accounts for all the letters.
This may be the basis of clue (or it may be nonsense).

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for dupe that I've seen before include "Puppet" , "One deceived, tricked" , "Con" , "Massacre" , "Person who is deceived or tricked" .)

I've seen this clue in The Telegraph.
