Where to go for a flying visit? (7)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

airport

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'where to go' is the definition.
Although both the answer and definition are singular nouns, I don't see how one could define the other.

'flying visit?' is the wordplay.
'flying' becomes 'air' (similar in meaning).
'visit?' becomes 'port' (I can't explain this - if you can you should give a lot more credence to this answer).
'air'+'port'='AIRPORT'

'for a' is the link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for airport that I've seen before include "Transport hub" , "Aerodrome" , "where flight begins or ends" , "O'Hare or Kennedy, say" , "Place from which to fly" .)

I've seen this clue in The Irish News.
