ELO perhaps changes direction, inspired by detuned flute (9)
I believe the answer is:
flageolet
'flute' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)
'elo perhaps changes direction inspired by detuned' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite understand how this works, but
an anagram of 'elo' is 'eol' which is present in the answer.
'direction' could be 'l' (short for left) and 'l' is present in the answer.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).
Can you help me to learn more?
(Other definitions for flageolet that I've seen before include "Small flute" , "bean!" , "instrument is played" , "Blow me" , "Pipe" .)
