Total calculated wrongly then correctly (8)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

outright

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'total' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)

'calculated wrongly then correctly' is the wordplay.
'calculated wrongly' becomes 'out' (I can't explain this - if you can you should give a lot more credence to this answer).
'then' is a charade indicator (letters next to each other).
'correctly' becomes 'right' (synonyms).
'out'+'right'='OUTRIGHT'

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for outright that I've seen before include "Absolute - utter" , "Without reservation or stipulation" , "Without qualification" , "Completely and openly - say a win" , "Completely and entirely, not gradually" .)
