Crossword Genius

A row of boxes perhaps (8)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

hedgerow

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'a row of boxes perhaps' is the definition.
I can't tell whether this defines the answer.

'a row of boxes' is the wordplay.
'a row' becomes 'hedge' (I have seen 'Row of bushes ' mean 'hedge' so perhaps 'row' could also mean 'hedge').
'of boxes' becomes 'row' (I can't justify this - if you can you should give a lot more credence to this answer).
'hedge'+'row'='HEDGEROW'

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for hedgerow that I've seen before include "Field boundary" , "rural boundary" , "Line of entwined bushes and trees" , "Field border" , "Bushy boundary" .)

I've seen this clue in The Globe and Mail.
