Crossword Genius

A sportsman's small slipper (4)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

luge

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

This clue might be a double definition.

'a sportsman's' is the first definition.
Although both the answer and definition are singular nouns, I can't understand how one could define the other.

'small slipper' is the second definition.
The definition and answer can be both man-made objects as well as being singular nouns.
Maybe there's a link between them I don't understand?

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for luge that I've seen before include "Glue (anag) - racing toboggan" , "Glue for a one-man sledge" , "Small sledge for one" , "Form of transport" , "Racing sled for one or two people" .)

I've seen this clue in the Evening Standard.
