I believe the answer is:

copland

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'american composer' is the definition.
'copland' can be an answer for 'composer' (I've seen this before). I am not sure about the 'american' bit.

'officer arrive at heathrow maybe' is the wordplay.
I cannot really understand how this works, but
'officer' could be 'cop' (cop is a kind of officer) and 'cop' is present in the answer.
'arrive' could be 'land' (landing is a kind of arriving) and 'land' is found within the answer.
This accounts for all the letters.
This explanation may well be incorrect...

'and' is the link.

(Other definitions for copland that I've seen before include "Aaron -; Rodeo, Billy the Kid composer" , "Notes expert" , "American composer (Fanfare for the Common Man)" , "Creator of notes" , "See 9" .)

I've seen this clue in The Guardian.
