Ross

I believe the answer is:

roe deer

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

This clue might be a double definition.

'animal' is the first definition.
(type of animal)

'paddled here by the sound of it' is the second definition.
Although both the answer and definition are singular nouns, I can't see how one could define the other.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for roe deer that I've seen before include "Buck perhaps" , "Creatures" , "Cervine animal" , "Small species of ungulate" , "Antlered woodland creature" .)

I've seen this clue in The Telegraph.
