Crossword Genius

Animals good for, say, North America (5)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

fauna

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'animals' is the definition.
(I've seen this in another clue)

'say north america' is the wordplay.
'say north' becomes 'faun' (I can't explain this - if you can you should believe this answer much more).
'america' becomes 'A' (common abbreviation eg in USA).
'faun'+'a'='FAUNA'

'good for' is the link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for fauna that I've seen before include "list of animals" , "The animals found in a particular area" , "Animals of a region or habitat" , "Wild animal life of an era" , "Flora and - -" .)

I've seen this clue in the Sydney Morning Herald.
