The answer and definition can be both to do with creating things as well as being verbs in their -s form.
Perhaps you can see a link between them that I can't see?

'magazine spreads for example showing a variety of collections' is the wordplay.
I cannot really see how this works, but
'example' could be 'type' (I've seen this in another clue) and 'type' is located in the answer.
'collections' could be 'sets' (set is a kind of collection) and 'sets' is found in the answer.
This accounts for all the letters.
This explanation may well be incorrect...
