I believe the answer is:

salvo

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'artillery fire' is the definition.
'salvo' can be an answer for 'fire' (salvo is a kind of fire). I am unsure of the 'artillery' bit.

I don't understand the rest of the clue.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for salvo that I've seen before include "Discharge of weapons in unison" , "Barrage" , "concentrated fire" , "Simultaneous firing of weapons" , "Firing of guns as a salute" .)

I've seen this clue in the Sydney Morning Herald.
