Crossword Genius

Assistant on course leaves here? (5)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

caddy

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

This clue might be a double definition.

'assistant' is the first definition.
Although both the answer and definition are singular nouns, I can't understand how they can define each other.

'course leaves here?' is the second definition.
The answer and definition can be both man-made objects as well as being singular nouns.
Perhaps there's a link between them I don't understand?

'on' acts as a link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for caddy that I've seen before include "In which Earl Grey may be" , "Tea box" , "Storage container for tea" , "supplier of tea" , "Give assistance to a professional" .)

I've seen this clue in The Telegraph.
