Crossword Genius

Baker perhaps follows short cut to do decorative work (7)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

crochet

'do decorative work' is the definition.
(crocheting is a decorative craft)

'baker perhaps follows short cut to' is the wordplay.
'baker perhaps' becomes 'Chet' (trumpeter Chet Baker).
'follows' means one lot of letters go next to another.
'short' says to take the initial letters.
'to' becomes 'ro' (I can't justify this - if you can you should give a lot more credence to this answer).
The first letter of 'cut' is 'c'.
'c'+'ro'='cro'
'chet' put after 'cro' is 'CROCHET'.

(Other definitions for crochet that I've seen before include "Type of needlework" , "Work yarn with hook" , "In music, a note equal to half a minim" , "Decorative needlework using hooks" , "Make using thread and hooked needle" .)

I've seen this clue in The Independent.
