Crossword Genius

Bar crowd in prime locations (3)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

rod

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

This clue might be a double definition.

'bar' is the first definition.
(both can mean a pole or stick)

'crowd in prime locations' is the second definition.
Although both the answer and definition are singular nouns, I can't see how one could define the other.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for rod that I've seen before include "Fisherman's item" , "The fly fisherman's stick" , "Fishing pole" , "See 13" , "Flexible stick for 11 Down" .)

I've seen this clue in The Independent.
