Crossword Genius

Be too clever for - but not in intelligence? (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

outwit

'be too clever for' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)

'not in intelligence?' is the wordplay.
'not in' becomes 'out' ('out' is the opposite to 'in').
'intelligence?' becomes 'wit' (wit is a kind of intelligence).
'out'+'wit'='OUTWIT'

'but' is the link.

(Other definitions for outwit that I've seen before include "Hoodwink" , "Surpass in ingenuity" , "Mentally get the better of" , "Get the better of by being smarter" , "Be too smart for, defeat" .)

I've seen this clue in The Globe and Mail.
