Behind the driver, having left solvent (2,3,5)
I believe the answer is:
in the black
'solvent' is the definition.
(I've seen this in another clue)
'behind the driver having left' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite see how this works, but
'the' could be 't' (the is pronounced as a 't' sound in some dialects) and 't' is found within the answer.
'left' could be 'l' (common abbreviation) and 'l' is found in the answer.
'behind' could be 'back' (similar in meaning) and 'back' is located in the leftover letters.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).
Can you help me to learn more?
(Other definitions for in the black that I've seen before include "Funeral directors are usually" , "widow may be seen thus" , "Where roulette ball may land" , "able to pay debts" , "Solvent; out of debt" .)
