Being unsophisticated, Sherlock left out play on words (8)
I believe the answer is:
homespun
'being unsophisticated' is the definition.
(I've seen this in another clue)
'out play on words' is the wordplay.
'out' becomes 'homes' (I am not sure about this - if you are sure you should believe this answer much more).
'play on words' becomes 'pun' (synonyms).
'homes'+'pun'='HOMESPUN'
'sherlock left' acts as a link.
I am not very happy about this link. Some or all of it may be part of another bit of the clue.
Can you help me to learn more?
(Other definitions for homespun that I've seen before include "Folksy - open mush (anag)" , "Unsophisticated; a coarse fabric" , "Artless and straightforward" , "Artless - posh menu (anag)" , "Rustic" .)
