Crossword Genius

Bouncer drunk at dance (8)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

highball

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'bouncer' is the definition.
Although both the answer and definition are singular nouns, I can't understand how they can define each other.

'drunk at dance' is the wordplay.
'drunk' becomes 'high' (I've seen this before).
'at' says to put letters next to each other.
'dance' becomes 'ball' (ball is a kind of dance).
'high'+'ball'='HIGHBALL'

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for highball that I've seen before include "Spirit and soda in tall glass - lob (8);" , "Mixed drink served in a tall glass" , "Mixed alcoholic drink; go fast" , "American drink with spirits and soda in tall glass" , "Iced alcoholic drink in tall glass" .)

I've seen this clue in The Globe and Mail.
