Crossword Genius

Breather, then energy needed in fencing move (5)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

lunge

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'in fencing move' is the definition.
'lunge' can be an answer for 'move' (lunge is a kind of move). I'm not sure about the 'in fencing' bit.

'breather then energy' is the wordplay.
'breather' becomes 'lung' (I've seen this before).
'then' means one lot of letters go next to another.
'energy' becomes 'e' (physics symbol as in E=mc2).
'lung'+'e'='LUNGE'

'needed' is the link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for lunge that I've seen before include "sudden movement forwards" , "Sudden forward move" , "Trust forward as with sword" , "foil attack?" , "Thrust forward as with sword" .)

I've seen this clue in The Telegraph.
