Came between people (10)
I believe the answer is:
interceded
'came' is the definition.
Although both the answer and definition are past participle verbs, I can't understand how one could define the other.
'between people' is the wordplay.
'between' becomes 'inter'.
'people' becomes 'ceded' (I can't justify this - if you can you should believe this answer much more).
'inter'+'ceded'='INTERCEDED'
