Crossword Genius

Climbing team traps live mountain goat (4)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

ibex

'mountain goat' is the definition.
(I've seen this in another clue)

'climbing team traps live' is the wordplay.
'climbing' says the letters should be written in reverse (in a down clue, letters climb up).
'team' becomes 'XI' (a football team, from Roman numerals for 11).
'traps' is an insertion indicator.
'live' becomes 'be' (synonyms).
'xi' backwards is 'ix'.
'ix' placed around 'be' is 'IBEX'.

(Other definitions for ibex that I've seen before include "Sure-footed climber" , "Mountain-goat" , "one used to high living" , "Wild goat with large recurved horns" , "Wild goat of North Africa" .)

I've seen this clue in The Times.
