Crossword Genius

Coastal feature ripe for redevelopment (4)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

pier

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'coastal feature' is the definition.
Although both the answer and definition are singular nouns, I don't understand how they can define each other.

'ripe for redevelopment' is the wordplay.
'for redevelopment' indicates anagramming the letters (letters developed into a new form).
'ripe' with letters rearranged gives 'PIER'.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for pier that I've seen before include "Promenade over water" , "Seaside platform" , "Landing stage; arch support" , "Structure extending seawards" , "Part of airport terminal; breakwater" .)

I've seen this clue in the Evening Standard.
