Column missing front piece of Italian stucco? (7)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

plaster

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'stucco?' is the definition.
(stucco is a kind of plaster)

'column missing front piece of italian' is the wordplay.
I cannot really see how this works, but
'piece' could be 'aster' (aster is a kind of piece) and 'aster' is located in the answer.
This may be the basis of clue (or it may be nonsense).

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for plaster that I've seen before include "First-aid item" , "Cover for cut" , "Wall and ceiling covering" , "Wall/ceiling covering" , "Wall surface" .)

I've seen this clue in The Telegraph.
