Crossword Genius

Conflicting points trouble the slowcoach (5)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

snail

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'slowcoach' is the definition.
Although both the answer and definition are singular nouns, I can't understand how one could define the other.

'conflicting points trouble' is the wordplay.
'conflicting points' becomes 'sn' (two compass points. I am not sure about the 'conflicting' bit.).
'trouble' becomes 'ail' (synonyms).
'sn'+'ail'='SNAIL'

'the' acts as a link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for snail that I've seen before include "trailer" , "Slow slithery animal" , "Slow-moving creature" , "Common garden mollusc" , "10 ac mollusc" .)

I've seen this clue in the Evening Standard.
