Crossword Genius

County welcoming a suit (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

hearts

'suit' is the definition.
(hearts is a playing card suit)

'county welcoming a' is the wordplay.
'county' becomes 'Herts' (short for Hertfordshire).
'welcoming' means one lot of letters goes inside another (in sense of 'inviting in').
'herts' placed around 'a' is 'HEARTS'.

(Other definitions for hearts that I've seen before include "Soccer club" , "Edinburgh football team - suit" , "They beat" , "Card game and centres of emotions, it's said" , "Card suit and essential organs" .)

I've seen this clue in The Telegraph.
