Crossword Genius

Cover model ring in coarse fabric (7)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

matting

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'coarse fabric' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)

'cover model ring' is the wordplay.
'cover' becomes 'mat' (I've seen this in another clue).
'model ring' becomes 'ting' (I have seen 'Sharp ring ' mean 'ting' so perhaps 'ring' could also mean 'ting'. I am not sure about the 'model' bit.).
'mat'+'ting'='MATTING'

'in' acts as a link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for matting that I've seen before include "Fibre for floor covering" , "Floor-covering" , "Flooring" , "Coarse fabric" , "Carpet" .)

I've seen this clue in the Sydney Morning Herald.
