Crossword Genius

Cut back court demand (5)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

exact

'demand' is the definition.
(exacting is a kind of demanding)

'cut back court' is the wordplay.
'cut' becomes 'axe' (I've seen this before).
'back' shows that the letters should be reversed in order.
'court' becomes 'ct'.
'axe' in reverse letter order is 'exa'.
'exa'+'ct'='EXACT'

(Other definitions for exact that I've seen before include "Not approximate, precise" , "Precise, accurate" , "Finished" , "totally accurate" , "Absolutely accurate or correct" .)

I've seen this clue in The Independent.
