Crossword Genius

Cut in contributions to the Treasury uncovered (3)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

axe

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'cut' is the definition.
(both can mean to cancel or remove)

'contributions to the treasury uncovered' is the wordplay.
'contributions to' becomes 'ax' (I can't explain this - if you can you should believe this answer much more).
'the treasury' becomes 'chest' (I've seen this in another clue).
'uncovered' says to take the centre.
The central letter of 'chest' is 'e'.
'ax'+'e'='AXE'

'in' is the link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for axe that I've seen before include "can bring down plane" , "Sack with cleaver?" , "Cut costs or staff drastically" , "Tool for chopping wood" , "Cutter" .)

I've seen this clue in The Times and The Independent.
