Ross

I believe the answer is:

hazard

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'danger' is the definition.
(I know that hazard is a type of danger)

'most extreme characters going in with force' is the wordplay.
I cannot really see how this works, but
'extreme characters' could be 'az' (letters at the extremes of the alphabet) and 'az' is found in the answer.
The remaining letters 'hard' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't understand.
This explanation may well be incorrect...

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for hazard that I've seen before include "Something dangerous, such as black ice?" , "Danger; gamble" , "Potential danger" , "Obstruction feature on a golf course" , "Obstacle, source of danger" .)

I've seen this clue in The Times.
