Declare one's right to many an object (5)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

claim

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'declare' is the definition.
(I know that claim is a more specific form of the action affirm)

'one's right to many an object' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite see how this works, but
'one's' could be 'im' ('one is' is a formal way of saying 'I am') and 'im' is found within the answer.
'many' could be 'l' and 'l' is present in the answer.
'an' could be 'a' and 'a' is located in the answer.
'object' could be 'c' (C is an example) and 'c' is found in the answer.
This accounts for all the letters.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for claim that I've seen before include "Allegation" , "Call" , "Assert one's right to" , "Allege" , "Assert; demand" .)

I've seen this clue in the Evening Standard.
