I believe the answer is:

rheum

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'discharge' is the definition.
(I know that rheum is a type of discharge)

'explosive substance in hebridean island' is the wordplay.
I cannot really understand how this works, but
'explosive' could be 'he' (abbreviation for high explosive) and 'he' is found in the answer.
'substance' could be 'rum' (rum is a kind of substance) and 'rum' is located in the leftover letters.
This accounts for all the letters.
This explanation may well be incorrect...

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for rheum that I've seen before include "Watery mucous discharge" , "Moist discharge from nose or eyes" , "Eyes watering" , "nasal discharge" , "Watery discharge from eyes or nose" .)

I've seen this clue in The Times.
