Crossword Genius

Dismiss exhaust (3,3)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

run out

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

This clue could be a double definition.

'dismiss' is the first definition.
Although both the answer and definition are verbs in their base form, I cannot understand how one could define the other.

'exhaust' is the second definition.
(I know that run out is a kind of exhaust)

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for run out that I've seen before include "Dismissed (at cricket)" , "Come to an end" , "Dismissed while attempting to sprint between the wickets" , "Dismissed by a fielder" , "being dismissed by umpire" .)

I've seen this clue in the Sydney Morning Herald.
