Crossword Genius

Down-to-earth supporters (4)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

feet

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'supporters' is the definition.
(both can mean a base or foundation)

'down-to-earth' is the wordplay.
I cannot really understand how this works, but
'earth' could be 'e' and 'e' is located in the answer.
The remaining letters 'fet' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't understand.
This may be the basis of clue (or it may be nonsense).

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for feet that I've seen before include "Unit used to measure" , "Imperial units of length" , "supporters?" , "Old measures - that fill shoes" , "Body parts; lengths" .)
