Enigmatic composer of The Spanish rag? (5)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

elgar

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'enigmatic composer' is the definition.
'elgar' can be an answer for 'composer' (Edward Elgar). I am not certain of the 'enigmatic' bit.

'the spanish rag?' is the wordplay.
'the spanish' becomes 'el' ('the' in Spanish).
'rag?' becomes 'gar' (I can't justify this - if you can you should give a lot more credence to this answer).
'el'+'gar'='ELGAR'

'of' is the link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for elgar that I've seen before include "Out of the strange glare comes an English composer" , "Glare at great English composer" , "Score-person" , "Enigma Variations composer" , "13 composer, 1857-1934" .)

I've seen this clue in the Evening Standard.
