Crossword Genius

Expelling all adults from area, a great sorrow emerges (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

regret

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'expelling' is the definition.
Although both the answer and definition are singular nouns, I can't understand how they can define each other.

'all adults from area a great sorrow emerges' is the wordplay.
I cannot really see how this works, but
'from' could be 'e' (I've seen this in other clues) and 'e' is found in the answer.
'great' could be 'gr' (abbreviation used in place names) and 'gr' is found within the answer.
The remaining letters 'ret' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't see.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for regret that I've seen before include "Subsidiary theorem" , "Feeling or repentance or sorrow" , "Feel sorry about" , "Feel remorse for" , "Be sorry for, wish it hadn't happened" .)

I've seen this clue in The Independent.
