Farm worker, lacking aid, raised millions? (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

myriad

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'farm worker' is the definition.
Although both the answer and definition are singular nouns, I can't understand how one could define the other.

'lacking aid raised millions?' is the wordplay.
I cannot really see how this works, but
an anagram of 'aid' is 'iad' which is present in the answer.
'millions?' could be 'm' (abbreviation for millions) and 'm' is found within the answer.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for myriad that I've seen before include "Lots of" , "a vast number, perhaps innumerable" , "Large indefinite number" , "Host" , "Immense number found by dim ray" .)

I've seen this clue in The Independent.
