Ross

I believe the answer is:

eric

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'fine' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)

'piece from 1 i clued' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite understand how this works, but
'piece' could be 'r' (abbreviation for Rook) and 'r' is found in the answer.
'from' could be 'e' (I've seen this in other clues) and 'e' is found within the answer.
'1' could be 'i' (roman numeral) and 'i' is found in the answer.
A single letter 'c' remains which might be clued in a way I don't understand.
This explanation may well be incorrect...

(Other definitions for eric that I've seen before include "-- Clapton, guitarist" , "- Morecambe, comic" , "-- Sykes; -- Idle" , "Mr Clapton" , "-- Idle; -- Morecambe" .)

I've seen this clue in The Independent.
